No More ‘Whole Paycheck’: Reddit Users on Whole Foods’ Best Budget Buys

Although Whole Foods’ bright green signage may bring back memories of painfully empty pockets, Bezos-sponsored times have changed. In these days of sky-high prices, there are actually a few products you can buy from the Prime-affiliated grocery chain that will save you money and almost always achieve a pretty stellar quality rating. Plus, if you want to buy organic staples, most of their offerings already tick that box. Here’s what Reddit users shared while shopping at Whole Foods.

Prices are based on New York grocery costs. For this article, we compared Safeway’s online prices to those of Whole Foods.

Whatever your camp concerning: the oat flakes as a delicacy debate, those of us who have chosen a life filled with oats generally consume at a high volume. The best prices at WF usually come from the house brand “Whole Foods Market 365,” and if you’re looking to stock up on quick oats, this may be your new jam. A 42-ounce container of Quaker Oats Whole Grain Quick Oats typically costs $7.49 at Safeway, while the 365 counterpart costs $6.29 and is also organic.

You know how some people in college have a reputation for doing crazy things at parties? I was the girl who sometimes ate a can of (sober) beans out of laziness and hunger. Vulnerability aside, Whole Foods’ selection of organic canned beans is pretty much unbeatable. A can of Safeway ‘O’ Organics black beans is $1.69 each, while the same at Whole Foods is $1.19. This price extends to a variety of legumes, including chickpeas, cannellini and pinto.

A few dried fruits

Again, shout out oatmeal lovers because you have to dress it up to keep it interesting. Some types of dried fruit can be good value, such as pitted and dried prunes. An 8-ounce bag of Sunsweet at Safeway costs $4.49, while the same product from the 365 brand costs $4.29.

greek yogurt

It’s hard to find organic Greek yogurt at a better price than the Whole Foods store brand. A 32 oz. a container with 3% milkfat costs $5.79, while a similar Chobani container that is not organic costs $6.49 at Safeway.

frozen fruit

I’ve talked about the gospel of the smoothie before and I’ll continue this crusade by sharing great organic frozen fruit prices to encourage you to join this cult. 365 offers a variety of 12-ounce bags, like blueberries, raspberries, pineapple, and strawberries, that are priced lower than Safeway’s organic store-brand bags, which are also only 10 ounces. For some, like blueberries, the price difference is about a dollar, and for others less, but for quality and quantity, the Whole Foods option is a better bet.
